Project Type: Fixed Guardrail Supply, Installation and Certification
Location: York House, Manchester
Scope of Work: Supply, installation and certification of a galvanised key guard railing safety system to a car park area, providing protection from bin storage

Think Worksafe Ltd was engaged to supply, install and certify a fixed guardrail system at a commercial office building in central Manchester. The works addressed an unprotected area of the car park where bin storage presented a risk of impact damage to building infrastructure, in the absence of any physical barrier. The system was installed in accordance with the agreed quotation, supporting RAMS documentation and BS 6180:2011.

Works were carried out by a trained Think Worksafe technician, with all PPE supplied. The client received login access to the GetKonnected cloud management platform, providing visibility of site operatives, equipment logs and daily site activities.

The pre-works survey identified a car park area where bin storage was taking place in close proximity to building services with no guarding in place. The requirement was for a compact, floor-fixed guardrail system suited to an indoor concrete substrate.

The scope of works covered the following:

  • Supply, installation and certification of approximately 3.3 linear metres of key guard railing safety system
  • System specification: 1100mm high, twin rail, galvanised
  • Fixed to solid concrete floor using standard base flanges and Fischer FIS VL 300 T resin anchors with M12 anchor bolts
  • 3 x 1100mm high uprights installed as per the design drawing
  • All uprights drilled into the side of the blockwork, cut to size using a handheld bandsaw
  • Mid and top rails fitted and all grub screws torqued and rechecked on completion
  • Installation in accordance with BS 6180:2011
  • FFP3 dust masks worn during all drilling operations to control silica dust exposure

The guardrail was installed as per the design drawing. Upright spacing positions were marked and drilled first, then the ground brackets were fixed to the floor using M12 anchors and Fischer resin. Once the resin had set, the uprights were cut to size and positioned, with fittings located and grub screws tightened. Mid and top rails were then fitted in sequence, with a final check of all grub screws to confirm full tightening throughout.

The completed system was certified and tagged with a FallTec inspection record on completion, confirming the system type as guardrail, tested to BS7883:2019, with the next inspection due date recorded.

On-site works were completed in a single visit, running from 08:00 to 17:00. One operative attended site.

Key activities included:

  • Site induction completed on arrival
  • Guardrail system installed as per the drawing and design
  • All grub screws checked and rechecked on completion
  • Inspection tag fitted with next inspection date recorded
  • Client & sign-off obtained using the GetKonnected digital management platform

The project delivered a certified fixed guardrail system protecting building services infrastructure in the car park. Key outcomes included:

  • Approximately 3.3 linear metres of 1100mm high twin rail galvanised guardrail supplied, installed and certified
  • System fixed to concrete using M12 anchor bolts and Fischer FIS VL 300 T resin
  • Installation in accordance with BS 6180:2011
  • Inspection tag fitted, confirming certification and next inspection date
  • Full client and manager sign-off completed on the day of installation
  • Works completed within a single visit with no extra works required

This project shows Think Worksafe’s ability to assess a straightforward but specific site hazard and deliver a certified physical solution in a single visit. An unprotected car park area with bin storage adjacent to building services needed a proper fixed barrier; it got one, installed to standard and signed off the same day.
