Project Type: Guardrail Repair and Re-Certification
Location: Mosley Street, Manchester
Scope of Work: Repair and re-certification of a previously installed closed guardrail system around a glass atrium roof

Think Worksafe was brought in to repair and re-certify a guardrail system surrounding a glass atrium roof on a commercial property in central Manchester. The system had been installed previously by another contractor. It had failed to meet compliance standards due to incorrect installation methods and the use of unsuitable components. A site survey confirmed the scope of remedial works required, and the team completed a full compliant repair, returning the roof to safe, accessible use.

To minimise disruption to the building and its occupants, the works were scheduled outside normal office hours. The team started on site at 06:00 and had completed the installation and cleared the site by 08:30, well before the working day began.

The product used throughout was KeeGuard Premium, manufactured by Kee Safety.

The client contacted Think Worksafe after identifying that the existing guardrail installation was non-compliant. The system had been installed incorrectly. Incorrect components had also been used for a closed guardrail around a glass atrium roof.

As a result, the roof had been red-flagged. No safe access was possible until the installation was brought up to standard. The client needed a contractor who could assess the existing system, identify every deficiency and carry out a full compliant repair, with minimal impact on day-to-day building operations.

Getting this right mattered. A glass atrium roof presents specific risks. The guardrail system protecting it has to be correctly specified and correctly installed. There is no margin for shortcuts.

Think Worksafe carried out a site survey before any work began. The survey identified exactly what was needed to bring the installation into full compliance. The team specified the correct components for the application and planned the repair accordingly.

Works were scheduled to start at 06:00 to keep disruption to the building and its occupants as low as possible. Two operatives attended site and completed the guardrail installation in a single visit. The work was carried out using KeeGuard Premium components, supplied by Kee Safety, which are correctly rated for use in a closed guardrail application around a glass atrium roof.

The installation was complete and the site fully cleared by 08:30. Manager sign-off was completed the same day.

The repair delivered a fully compliant, certified guardrail system around the glass atrium roof. The roof, previously red-flagged and inaccessible, was returned to safe use.

The client was very happy with the outcome. Works were completed entirely outside office hours, so building operations continued without interruption. A roof that had been taken out of service due to a failed installation was brought back into compliance quickly, efficiently and with no disruption to the working day.
